Sony finally changes course, begins beta testing Fortnite cross-platform play

PS4 Fortnite players are no longer stuck in their own silo.

Sony is finally kicking off an open beta for cross-platform play in Fortnite, bringing to an end an embarrassing blemish on the company’s stance on online gaming.

One of the best parts about Fortnite is that it’s available on pretty much every platform imaginable — it’s the Skyrim of battle royale games. With versions for Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, iOS and Android, you can pick up and play wherever you are on the same account, regardless of device.

Except Sony, who has infamously been stubborn on the prospect of cross-platform play, despite their contemporaries Microsoft and Nintendo (even Nintendo!) embracing it. Sony hadn’t backed down for months until today, so it’s unclear what changed, but it’s a welcome change of course nonetheless.

Sony’s Playstation chief, John Kodera, had the following to say:

We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution. The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.

While Fortnite is the only game in testing for cross-platform play, hopefully this is the first step of a renewed partnership between the major console developers.
