2019 marks the 80th birthday of Marvel Comics, and to celebrate, the company is releasing six one-shots inspired by Marvel titles before the age of superhero comics. Announced at New York Comic Con’s “Next Big Thing Panel,” Crypt of Shadows, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, and War is Hell will kickoff the celebration in January 2019 followed by Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal, Love Romances, and Gunhawks in February.
Crypt of Shadows will be a throwback to the horror comics of the 1970’s written by Al Ewing and drawn by Garry Brown while Journey Into Unknown Worlds celebrates Marvel’s early science fiction stories and will be written by Cullen Bunn with art by Clay McLeod Chapman and Francesco Manna.
War is Hell is the third January release and pays homage to Marvel’s horror infused war stories of the 1970’s. It will be written by Howard Chaykin and drawn by Phillip Kennedy Johnson.
While no creative teams were announced for the February throwback titles, each will tackle a new genre. Ziggy and the Silly Seal will be is reminiscent of old Saturday morning cartoons, while Love Romances and Gunhawk are romantic and western stories, respectively.
