There’s no denying Deadpool is a bona fide movie star. In fact, Box Office Mojo states that both Deadpool and its sequel made more than $300 million each. As a result, a third movie in Ryan Reynolds’ film franchise seems like a no-brainer, right? The only problem is a pesky little merger between 20th Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company.
The Disney takeover of Fox’s film properties came up November 3 during the “Pass the Chimichangas: Behind Deadpool on the Page and Screen” panel at Rhode Island Comic Con 2018. The Merc with a Mouth’s co-creator Rob Liefeld was on hand, along with the film’s stars Stefan Kapicic (Colossus) and Morena Baccarin (Vanessa).
“I’m scared, I won’t lie to you, I’m totally terrified,” Liefeld told a fan who asked if a Disney takeover could lead to a PG-13 Deadpool film during the panel’s question-and-answer segment. The creator went on to point out that an R-rated Deadpool performed better at the box office than Doctor Strange and two Ant-Man films.
Liefeld’s solution to the Disney dilemma? Trust in Ryan Reynolds.
“They should just give all the keys to Ryan, make sure he still can drive the Deadpool car,” Liefeld said to the audience.
Clearly, Liefeld trusts Reynolds with protecting his character’s legacy, as he went on to praise the actor’s portrayal of Wade Wilson.
“He knows him so well,” Liefeld said. “I mean, the truth is, and everyone will tell you this, Deadpool is really Ryan and Ryan is Deadpool. They’re like the same dude, I kid you not. I don’t know if he shoots people with guns in his spare time, but other than that, he’s Deadpool.”
So say there is a Deadpool 3, with the current cast remaining. Turns out, they have some ideas as to where they’d like to see their characters go.
Kapicic would like to see Colossus out of his metallic form, allowing fans to see Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin. Beyond that, maybe a second round with Juggernaut or even Mister Sinister, he suggested.Baccarin thought it might be fun to see Colossus living with Deadpool and Vanessa, before talking about Vanessa becoming Copycat, the character in the comics that inspired Wade’s onscreen love interest.
“I get asked all the time if I’m going to be Copycat, if that’s ever going to happen and, obviously, I have no idea, because I don’t write these things, nor should I,” Baccarin said. “But I think that would be a fun kind of place to see that relationship go–what happens after that happens to them, you know? And that relationship is very complicated, so I think it would be very interesting to see the complexity of their relationship with each other and other people and the world and just how those two progress.”
And let’s say Deadpool 2 is the end of this particular iteration of the anti-hero. The cast mentioned two other comic book characters they’d be willing to play on the big screen. For Baccarin, her choice was DC’s Catwoman, while Kapicic expressed interest in bringing Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter to life.
Hm, you know, Stefan, Sony is working on a Kraven film to join Venom in its Spider-Verse…
