The Wicked + The Divine: The Funnies #1 review: Turns the WicDiv world into comic strips full of love and mockery

To say too much would be taking away from the delight of reading this issue for yourself, so I will just say that this is a fantastic treat before the end comes.

What do you do when you are about to start the final arc of your award-winning, ultra serious comic about sex and death and gods and music? Hire your friends to turn it into comic strips!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Before the final arc of The Wicked + The Divine begins (sob), the boys decided to let loose and let a bunch of their friends have at their creation, and themselves, for some levity before the serious stuff sets in. And boy howdy, do they deliver. This issue has nine funnies, eight of which are by various creators, some well-known and some less so, and a bonus gag from Kieron and Jamie.

…to Chip Zdarsky doing his best mocking of Kieron and Jamie in his signature style. Even letterer Clayton Cowles gets to ink a comic, which is awesome to see. The issue feels like a delightful inside joke that every WicDiv reader is in on, and like any good inside joke, it’s done with as much love as mickey taking. Some of the comics are pure short jokes, and some are fuller stories. All are fantastically entertaining.
