Logan is dying, which is something most of us thought was impossible. Ed Brisson has been leading us to this point in his epic Old Man Logan run and it appears it is the beginning of the end for Logan in this new 12 part series aptly named Dead Man Logan. This is a series that is about revenge, squaring things away before your final passing, and a race to a finish line where somebody–or maybe everybody–is going to end up dead.

Why does this matter?
This is the end of an era thanks to Brisson and Jeff Lemire breathing new life into the Old Man Logan character when it could have so easily been a cash grab move to replace Wolverine. This is also the start of a series that will most likely tie in with Uncanny X-Men and I wouldn’t be surprised if the original Wolverine from the 616 universe gets pulled into this miniseries as well.
Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

As an extra-sized issue, this book sets things up for new readers, allows Logan to go on a chase for Mysterio, and get the villains in a place where the stakes are raised effectively. This is more of a mystery or detective story since it focuses on Logan tracking down Mysterio so that he can stop him from ever brainwashing him (or any other Logan in the timeline) to us against other heroes. It’s Logan’s final revenge and the last thing he needs to do to avoid his timeline from ever happening in the one he’s in now.
Brisson and artist Mike Henderson do a good job keeping the reader entertained as exposition is delivered. Logan ends up teaming up with an Avenger which allows for some B-lister jokes as well as a fun element to tie the usually grumpy Logan to. Only a couple mutants show up in this issue with Glob being the standout. Again, Brisson adds a touch of humor to Glob who has always been a bit weird, but his awkwardness shines through here. This issue doesn’t quite reveal a buddy cop narrative just yet, but if they continue down this path I think readers will enjoy the bad cop Logan element.
It’s no secret this series is about Logan trying to kill Mysterio, which seems odd when written out, but it makes sense. It’s rather fun to see how Brisson is upping Mysterio’s game in this issue, particularly because he’s in a sorry state when we first see him. It’s also nice to get little references to past events like how Mysterio technically died at one point. Forge is getting quite an interesting task which should be fun to follow, too.
Henderson’s art is excellent in this issue and his ability to draw a mean fight sequence is unparalleled. Logan has to cut through a number of villains and his scrappy ways are on full display. Glob is incredibly weird looking and Henderson does a great job instilling a sense of awkwardness, humor, and even care within the character. Facial expressions across the board are great which is a good thing since there are a few dialogue-heavy scenes.

It can’t be perfect can it?
Two things struck me as a bit odd with the narrative. The first is a bit more glaring and it has to do with convenient plotting. Logan can’t get a location on Mysterio so he goes to bust heads, then ends up at a dead end but conveniently gets help, then later on more convenience occurs to keep baddies at a safe distance from Logan’s claws.

The other element is how Logan is, without a doubt, planning on killing Mysterio, but the Avenger he teams up with is totally cool with that? It seems like a glaring element that should have came up. I guess the Avenger has some contingency plan to stop Logan if it comes to that, but it seems like a missed element.
Is it good?
I enjoyed this issue as it kickstarts Logan’s adventure in a clear way. It has a good balance of humor and action while also setting up a buddy cop style narrative that’ll be fun to read. Dead Man Logan has a detective noir sensibility that’s hard to resist.
