New Captain Marvel action figure confirms Jude Law’s character

Captain Marvel merchandise has begun hitting the shelves and with it comes the answer to a closely guarded Marvel Cinematic Universe secret: the identity of Jude Law’s character. Hasbro’s Marvel Legends action figures have confirmed that Law will play longtime Captain Marvel antagonist and Kree villain, Yon-Rogg. Law was originally reported to have been cast in the role of the legendary Kree hero Mar-Vell, but both he and Marvel have repeatedly refused to confirm the reports. Last week the official Captain Marvel website has Law’s character listed as Mar-Vell, but the information has since been removed.

In the comics, Yon-Rogg was a Kree soldier whose jealously of the legendary Kree hero Mar-Vell, led to him plotting to destroy Vell. This eventually culminated in a confrontation between the two Kree warriors on Earth, in which Carol Danvers was kidnapped by Rogg and used as a hostage. During the ensuing battle, a Kree device exploded, granting Danvers her powers and setting her down the path of Captain Marvel. Danvers would later battle Rogg on several occasions in which he used a machine to manipulate her using her memories.

Multiple shots within the trailers released by Marvel has sequences and imagery that suggest Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel is the victim of mind manipulation, which draws directly from the character’s comic book history. We know the Kree have waged a long standing intergalactic war against the race of shapeshifting Skrulls, and it’s likely that Captain Marvel was tricked into participating in this war. Skrulls have a brief appearance in the trailer on the beach, in what we can assume to be Earth. It’s highly possible that Captain Marvel will be fighting both alien races once the murky waters surrounding her memory are cleared.

The description of Yon Rogg’s Marvel Legends action figure reads, “Leader of the Starforce team, Yon-Rogg is a hero among the Kree and a key asset in the Supreme Intelligence’s war against the Skrulls.” You can see the figure below.

Captain Marvel is written and directed by the team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with screenplay contributions also made by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jac Schaeffer. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Djimon Hounson as Korath, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Jude Law as Yon-Rogg. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
