Move over Bumblebee, you’re no longer the only fresh new Transformers project in town. Netflix has ordered a new animated prequel series for the franchise, Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy, scheduled to premiere sometime in 2020.
Netflix, Hasbro, and the production studio Rooster Teeth have partnered with the animation studio Polygon Pictures, to bring the project to life. Polygon is no stranger to Transformers, having worked with Hasbro in 2012 on the animated television series Transformers Prime, for which the studio was awarded “Outstanding Special Class Animated Program” at the 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. The animation studio has also worked with Netflix to bring several animated Godzilla projects to the streaming service over the last two years.

“In this Transformers origin story, we will explore the expansive universe of Cybertron in a way that audiences have never seen before — to the delight of both existing fans and those coming to the franchise for the first time,” Director of Anime for Netflix John Derderian said in a statement. “The Transformers brand is a global phenomenon and we are thrilled to partner with Hasbro, Rooster Teeth and Polygon to bring this exciting new series to our members around the world on Netflix.”
FJ DeSanto, a veteran of previous Transformers animated series, will act as series showrunner, while writers will include George Krstic, Gavin Hignight and Brandon Easton.
