The first two issues of Freedom Fighters has revealed the patriotic core to a story about Nazis taking over America. It’s tragic, inspirational, and pretty damn action packed. The last issue showed Americans giving it to the Nazis, but the battle has only just begun. Especially with Uncle Sam still at large.
So what’s it about?
The official summary reads:
The Freedom Fighters are launching their biggest offensive ever against the Nazi regime…but the bad guys aren’t done for yet. The Hitler dynasty has made its move against the insurgency, and it’s in the form of their secret weapon: Hitler the Third. And boy, is this kid a deranged little psycho! If the resistance is to succeed, they’d better move fast and stir up enough support from the public to bring Uncle Sam back from the brink, or all hope will be lost…
Why does this matter?
Last issue did not hold back with the wide sweeping-action and was visually impressive. Each hero got their due toom showing how Robert Venditti and Eddy Burrows have a strong handle on this team book.

This issue does a good job establishing where the Nazi high command is and how even one strike on them is deemed a huge failure. Venditti is setting up the fact that a ragtag group of heroes is already making an impact. This issue features them not holding back with a second attack. A major Nazi leader also falls, further complicating things. A mix of terrorist (in the Nazis’ opinion) attacks and message to the people is how the heroes will truly win. Venditti also makes it very clear Uncle Sam is at the core of a real victory.
This issue also ever so slightly reveals what Americans have endured since the Nazis took over America after World War II. Slavery of two types is revealed amongst the heroes. This helps flesh them out, but also remind us these aren’t bright and shiny heroes like Superman, but heroes who have endured real hardship.
The art by Burrows with inks by Eber Ferreira and colors by Adriano Lucas are steeped in darkness and shadow. Even when Black Condor is busting up jets in the sky during the day he’s cast in dark shadow, never letting us forget this is a dark tale. His powers are quite impressive thanks to how they are rendered. Slicing jets has never looked so easy.

It can’t be perfect, can it?
This is a table setting issue with most of the development focused on the Nazi bastards. This issue also establishes two new key players for the villains. The heroes get a little, but the bigger organization they are run under (if there is one) is only subtly seen. The stakes are hard to gauge too since the Nazis mostly flounder and complain. There’s a hint at a superpowered force they may utilize, but at this stage, it’s difficult to even know if they’d need it since we don’t know what our heroes are really facing.
Is it good?
A good issue that starts to delve into who the heroes are and where they came from in a Nazi run America. The Nazis get a lot of focus, helping to put into focus how disorganized and ready for failure they are. It’s a setup issue for sure but has its moments.
