Judging by the Cover – 3/27/19 new releases

JJ and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Event Coordinator JJ Travers and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

JJ’s Picks:

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1956 #5
Cover art by Dave Johnson

Judging by the Cover - 3/27/19 new releases

Dark Horse Comics

Is this a comic book cover or promo art for an upcoming indy wrestling show? We’ve got Hellboy lounging with some booze on the map of Mexico, a headshot of a dude behind him in what I can only assume to be a luchador mask due to “MEXICO” being printed across his chin, and gorgeous cover art. I don’t really care what’s going on in the comic, because this cover art has made me realize how badly I want to see Hellboy wrestle a luchador. If it’s not a luchador mask I’m going to be very disappointed. Did I mention I like wrestling? Either way, this cover is not only well drawn, but equally hilarious.

William Gibson’s Alien 3 #5
Cover art by Johnnie Christmas

Dark Horse Comics

A comic based on the original Alien 3 screenplay, that features Hicks, Bishop, Newt, and Ripley — yeah I’m going to buy this. I really dig how simple the cover art is. When I think about how utterly horrifying the xenomorph is, and what it would be like to face one, I envision complete and utter terror. Everything else would fall away, leaving only the xenomorph and I. That’s what this cover says to me; in the face of the deadliest predator imaginable, the grip of terror is so strong, that the xenomorph will completely dominate your thoughts.

Star Wars: Vader – Dark Visions #2
Cover art by Greg Smallwood

Judging by the Cover - 3/27/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

This series had promised to take readers to the darkest parts of the galaxy, where there’s a Sith horse, mythical lore on previously unknown alien cultures, and new information on the ultimate badass, Darth Vader! I love how Vader IS the cover. He dominates the page, much like he does the galaxy. Within the folds of his robe we see an Imperial officer experiencing something horrific, which is more than likely being dolled out by the Sith Lord. A blast of red energy emerges from Vader, charges through the officer, and explodes within the Star Destroyer. Something bad is going to happen on that ship, and I can’t wait to see what it is.

Eric’s Picks:

Snotgirl #13
Cover art by Leslie Hung

Judging by the Cover - 3/27/19 new releases

Image Comics

This cover is fun. Seeing all of Snottie’s friends, enemies, and frenemies literally crawling all over her is a great representation of how much they irritate her and push her life in strange directions on a regular basis. The coloration is bright and pleasing to look at as always, and the way Hung draws hair never ceases to look great. Of the mini-characters, my favorite is probably Cutegirl with her dramatic purple dress and bat ears. All in all, this cover captures the series’ spirit very well.

Aliens: Resistance #3
Cover art by Tristan Jones

Judging by the Cover - 3/27/19 new releases

Dark Horse Comics

Talk about danger. I can’t think of many things more terrifying than the idea of being near a Xenomorph with almost nothing but grass between us. I really dig the line-art here; the amount of small details in the grass and on the titular alien is great. I also dig the fog throughout since its opacity adds to the sense of suspense.

Martian Manhunter #4
Cover art by Riley Rossmo

Judging by the Cover - 3/27/19 new releases

DC Comics

I think the solicitation of this cover a few months back was my first exposure to the series, and I was instantly interested. Rossmo’s quirky style is a great fit for J’onn, and he manages to make the character look alien without just relying on the elongated head shape that a lot of other artists used in the mid ’00s. J’onn’s big red eyes pop well against all the green, and the inclusion of the iguana is a fun, unexpected choice. The fact that it’s giving our hero an intense stare and mentioning a secret just makes it even better. I want to know what the secret is!
