Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its eighth and final season this Sunday. It’s been a painstaking almost two years since we’ve last seen a new episode of Game of Thrones, the series’ longest drought ever. It can be hard to remember how we got here and what’s gone down — that’s where we come in.
While we were fortunate enough to attend the season 8 premiere in New York last week, this article won’t contain spoilers for episode 1.
When to watch Game of Thrones season 8, episode 1: Sunday, April 14th, 9pm ET
Where to watch: HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now
How long is season 8, episode 1? 54 minutes
What’s the story so far?
It would take about as long as George RR Martin is taking with Winds of Winter to explain every plot point and nuance that we’ve seen in the Seven Kingdoms so far, but season 7 left us off with:
- The death of Littlefinger at the hands of Arya Stark. Arya slits Littlefinger’s throat with the Valyrian steel dagger after she accused him of treason, which Brandon confirms. Sansa and Arya become a united front after dispatching of Littlefinger.
- Daenerys, Jon Snow and their entourage meet with Cersei Lannister to demonstrate the true threat of the white walkers. Cersei, now realizing the threat is very real, vows to help the North defeat the army. However, it was later revealed she lied, and was using the opportunity to strike a weakened force. Cersei’s brother and lover Jaime abandons her after being disgusted by her actions, and rode to the North alone to fulfill his promise.
- It’s revealed that Jon Snow is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him related to Daenerys, who also happened to become his lover by the end of the episode. Because of his ancestry, Bran determines that Jon Snow is the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne.
- And finally, the Army of the Dead begins their relentless assault on the Wall thanks to the now-undead dragon Viserion piercing a hole in it, with no hope of respite in sight.
What will happen in Game of Thrones season 8?
Details have been extremely scarce regarding Game of Thrones season 8, which is easily the most anticipated season of television in history. However, HBO has released an official teaser and a trailer for the season, which lends some clues as to how the finale may go down:
