Movies to look forward to in May

Movies to look forward to in May

There are some promising movies coming out in May.

Avengers: Endgame will not be going anywhere anytime soon. The latest entry from the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks set to break every box office record ever. That being said, there are still plenty of movies coming out in May. From reimaginings to pocket monsters to the King of Monsters, there looks to be plenty to choose from in theaters. Is it summer already?

May 1st

Knife+Heart (Limited): A modern day giallo set in Paris? I am a huge fan of the genre but the most recent one I have had the chance to see is 2013’s The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears. Thanks to Arrow Video, I get to see the classics, but it is always nice to see a modern take. This one is about a porno director who -SURPRISE! – has to deal with someone killing her actors.

May 3rd

Long Shot (Nationwide): Seth Rogen is very funny, even though he has a tendency to be hit or miss. Charlize Theron is a very dependable actress who tends to raise the level of what she appears in. A romantic comedy about a journalist following his former babysitter who is now running for President seems beyond even her.

May 10th

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (Nationwide): Few things explain the age gap as well as Pokemon. Not into Pokemon? Just say, “I’m a few years older than you” and watch the looks of understanding. Based on a video game and starring characters like Psyduck. How excited am I? Well, I am a few years older than you.

May 16th

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum (Nationwide): John Wick is an unstoppable hitman that kills for honor, love, and his puppy. Sometimes you just need a movie that lets you turn off your brain and gush at the spectacle. John Wick provides that in spades.

May 24th

Aladdin (Nationwide): Another Disney animated classic made into a live action spectacle. The trailers have not been met with the best reception. Will Smith has big shoes to fill in the role made famous by Robin Williams. A whole new generation may fall in love with this remake, but will older generations steer them towards the original instead?

BrightBurn (Nationwide): For fans of Superman: Red Son this is a treat. The 2003 Elseworlds comic asked what would happen if Superman landed in Russia instead of America. This James Gunn produced movie asks what if Superman was a horror movie? The film is not actually about the Man of Steel, but does borrow heavily from his origin. This could end up being a lot of fun.

May 31st

Godzilla: King of Monsters (Nationwide): The subject of 1970’s rock songs, the tears of AiPT! podcaster’s tears, and everyone’s favorite kaiju returns. Not only does this one look as menacing as a Godzilla movie should, it also is the precursor for the battle between a battle between Godzilla and King Kong. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the only shared universe in town.

Ma (Nationwide): Octavia Spencer stars as Ma. The titular character buys liquor from some desperate teenagers one day. She invites them back to her place and from there it looks like she begins stalking them, killing them, and possibly hooking up with them. It looks absolutely horrible and potentially one of the most entertaining movies of the month.
