November 3, 2017 feels like forever ago to a lot of World of Warcraft players. Why is this day significant? Well it’s the day Blizzard swept all the rumors aside and officially announced that WoW classic was really, finally, happening. No more bootleg private servers and skirting Blizzards TOS, real live supported classic servers for players to enjoy.
Fans got their first close look at WoW Classic at last year’s BlizzCon. Blizzard allowed fans lucky enough to attend the convention to demo the game, and during panels players world wide got to hear directly from the WoW developer’s working on restoring classic. Blizzard revealed that it couldn’t recover much of the original code, and had to do a lot of work to restore the game to its original state.
Blizzard revealed at BlizzCon that fans could expect WoW Classic in 2019, but we didn’t know exactly when the official release would be. That all changed yesterday when the World of Warcraft Twitter officially announced WoW Classic would be going live worldwide August 27.
Well today brought another pleasant surprise to some very lucky WoW Classic fans, the beta! If you’ve opted in to beta testing WoW Classic, you’ll want to check your BattleNet launcher to see if you’re one of the lucky few who have been selected to be a part of the beta testing.
Players chose to help test the beta will be able to play from level 1 to 30. WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas tells us that the beta will be “uncharacteristically small compared to our expansions,” in part to ensure that the focus is on the proper launch this August.
The Classic version reverts the game to how it was when the ‘Drums of War’ update (patch 1.12) was released in August 2006. World of Warcraft subscribers will be able to play WoW Classic for free as part of their existing subscription cost for WoW proper.
