It’s official: Robert Pattinson is ‘The Batman’

It’s official: we have ourselves a new Caped Crusader.

The negotiations we reported on earlier this month are true: Robert Pattinson is officially the new Batman.

Warner Bros. has approved Pattinson for a deal that will see the Twilight actor playing the Caped Crusader in an upcoming trilogy, titled at this time as simply “The Batman,” with Matt Reeves in the directors chair.

As recently as yesterday Pattinson was reportedly in competition for the role with Nicholas Hoult (Tolkien), with both actors actively screen testing for the coveted cowl. Warner Bros. ultimately settled on the Twilight star. Don’t feel too bad for Hoult, he’s already got a superhero role on his resume, as Hank McCoy /Beast in the X-Men franchise.

…Next Batman, what do you think?

For multiple actors to screen test for a role isn’t a very common practice, but when you consider how important Batman is to Warner Bros., and the fact that he’s arguably the most iconic superhero of all-time, well, you understand Warner Bros’ thoroughness.

A number of fans have been critical of the idea of Pattinson in the role of Batman, due to his role in the Twilight series. But it’s important to note that Pattinson is an award-winning actor, having received widespread praise for his performance in 2018’s Good Time and 2014’s The Rover.

The film will be produced by Dylan Clark, who produced Reeves’ Planet of the Apes films.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in North America on June 25, 2021.
