Amazon’s Carnival Row teaser introduces a fantasy-noir series

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne star.

Amazon has released a new teaser trailer for its upcoming Victorian-era fantasy-noir series Carnival Row.

The series takes place in a Victorian fantasy world in which mythical creatures have fled from their war-torn countries after the invasion of human led armies, gathering in Carnival Row, the destitute ghetto of an unknown city. Carnival Row’s ever growing population struggles to coexist with humans, with each side forbidden to live with or love the other.

Orlando Bloom co-leads the cast as human detective Rycroft Philostrate, alongside Cara Delevingne as the refugee faerie Vignette Stonemoss. The pair walk the edge of the sword as they carry on a forbidden affair in secret, within an extremely intolerant society. Their love for one another soon becomes secondary to a greater concern, the city is threatening to destroy itself as a string of unsolved murders begins.

The trailer doesn’t reveal too much, as all you can see is both lead characters in their Victorian attire against the backdrop of the city. Vignette Stonemoss explains that there is a “rift in the city.” To which Bloom’s Rycroft Philostrate replies, “time is running out. Something inhuman approaches.” Stonemoss closes the trailer with, “We must all come together.”

The series is based on a feature film spec script written by Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim) entitled A Killing on Carnival Row. Series showrunner René Echevarria (Star Trek: The Next Generation) helped Beacham co-write the series, which was shot entirely in the Czech Republic throughout 108 days. Jon Amiel (Sommersby) directed all of the series’ eight-episode first season.

Carnival Row Season 1 will be released in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video August 30, 2019.
