Back in March of 2018, THQ Nordic announced that they were teaming up with Nickelodeon to bring back a bunch of old, licensed games they made back in the day when they were simply known as THQ. According to them, we would see games like Tak and the Power of Juju, Rugrats, Rocket Power, and others returning, this time to modern console.
This, of course, also meant the return of SpongeBob SquarePants video games. The yellow sponge has been in plenty of games over the years, from side-scrollers to simple adventure games, to even point-and-clicks on the PC. There was, however, only one game in particular that I and many other fans were hoping to see return.
And as of June 5th, THQ Nordic announced, via the theme song, the return of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom. Not only a simple remaster, but full-on remake like the Crash and Spyro Trilogies.
Battle for Bikini Bottom was a classic GameCube, PS2, and Xbox game that starred the popular sponge and two best buddies, Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, as they teamed up to save their town. Plankton unleashed a robot horde but forget to have them, you know, obey him. So our heroes have to clean up his mess. The game is a collect-a-thon in the vein of the original Jak & Daxter and Spyro trilogy, with some puzzle-solving, platforming, and action.
The remake is set to contain a new multiplayer feature featuring a horde mode, while also bringing in some cut content from the original game. For instance, the Gameboy Advance version of the game had a boss battle with Robo Squidward. The original console games didn’t have that. However, the new remake will include the boss fight!
While the game sadly will not be seen at E3, hopefully we’ll be able to see more of it in some form before the year is out. With a redesign to its visuals and gameplay, plus its new content, there’s sure to be plenty here for new and old fans to enjoy.
