The summer movie season has already been filled with memorable blockbusters. As summer heads into its last month and kids get ready to return to school, it only makes sense the pace would slow down. Instead, August may be the busiest month of the summer with action, horror, animated movies, and franchise installments all scheduled to be released during the month. Here are the most anticipated movies of August.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (Nationwide): From Idris Elba running down a skyscraper to Dwayne Johnson pulling a helicopter from the sky with nothing but a chain and his all natural muscles, this looks like the silliest and most fun action movie of the year. No small feat when John Wick 3 also came out in 2019. (Check out the latest episode of Adventures in Movies! above to enter the Hobbs & Shaw gift pack giveaway.)
Them That Follow (Limited): Boasting a cast that includes Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, this thriller is about an obscure sect of Pentecostals who take up snake handling to prove their worthiness to God. When the pastor’s daughter learns a dangerous secret, she is forced to confront the deadly tradition.
The Kitchen (Nationwide): Based on the Vertigo Comics series and starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss. The story centers around three mob wives who have to take matters into their own hands after their husbands are sent to prison.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold (Nationwide): It is something of a surprise it has taken this long for the popular animated series to get its own live action adaptation. As Dora heads into high school, her and a group of friends go on an adventure to save Dora’s parents. Along the way the attempt to unlock the mystery of an ancient Inca city.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Nationwide): This popular and controversial series finally gets a movie adaptation. Taking place in 1968, the movie centers on a group of teenagers that find a book of scary stories that become all too real. To get fully prepared for the movie check Regina Chavez’s review of the documentary Scary Stories.
Good Boys (Nationwide): The trailers for this movie have been some of the funniest of the year. It has been nothing more than toilet humor and crude jokes, but it is also coming from the mouths of tweens. In other words, it is hilarious. Hopefully, the trailers have not shown all the best parts.
Where’d You Go Bernadette? (Nationwide): I’d swear there’s a comma missing in the title. I love director Richard Linklater and I think Cate Blanchett is great. That being said, I have no idea what this movie is about. A woman who seems to hate her job and neighbors seems to ditch her husband and daughter who love her. How this does not make her a bad person or makes the movie interesting is beyond me.
Ready or Not (Nationwide): Samara Weaving stars as a young bride who takes part in her new family’s tradition inviting her into the family. A unique and fun looking horror movie that is different from others released this year.
Cold Case Hammarskjold (Limited): Danish documentarian Mads Brugger about a 1961 plane crash that ended in the death of a United Nations General Secretary. No reason has been given for the crash over fifty years later. Brugger attempts to uncover what happened.
Angel Has Fallen (Nationwide): The third part of the Has Fallen franchise sees Gerard Butler return as Secret Service agent Mike Banning. Banning has been framed for an assassination attempt against the President of the United States and must now run from his former allies.
Don’t Let Go (Nationwide): Blumhouse is a name audiences can trust when it comes to entertaining horror movies. Still, this is the second horror movie they have released this year involving time. The lack of marketing is also a little concerning.
