Rey wields a double-sided lightsaber in new ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ footage

D23 attendees were treated to a stunning sizzle reel teasing Rey’s future.

While a new trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did not surface, D23 attendees were treated to exclusive footage of the film that featured Rey wielding a new double-sided red lightsaber modeled after her staff from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The 60-second clip shown to attendees offered a tantalizing look at Rey’s potential character arc in the final film of the Skywalker saga — an arc that seemingly sees her exploring the dark side of the force. While the clip reportedly showed Rey dueling Kylo Ren with her usual blue lightsaber, apparently Rey’s double-sided lightsaber was red and she was wearing a dark hood while holding it, leading many to believe she is being manipulated by Palpatine.

Fans should still be tepid about this being an outright confirmation that Rey turns to the dark side in this film. It would be unheard of for Disney to confirm such a massive plot point in a sizzle reel rather than letting fans experience it in the theaters, so fans should keep an open mind about the direction of Rey’s arc until they see the film themselves. This could just be a look at a Palpatine induced Force-vision, after all.

Regardless, fans have been clamoring for Rey to get a dual-bladed lightsaber since she showed off her proficiency with a staff in The Force Awakens. Force-vision or not, seeing Rey get this sweet new saber should be a very cool sight.
