Watch the new D23 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer

This is your fight.

Disney has officially released a new trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that was shown this weekend exclusively to attendees of their D23 Fan Expo.

There was a huge amount of buzz on social media following the video’s exclusive release at the D23 Star Wars panel this weekend. Which is normal for anything revealed for an upcoming Star Wars film, but this time it was a little different. Fans in attendance saw something very unexpected — Rey wielding, well, something. Watch it here:

The trailer opens with footage from the original trilogy and takes fans up through the prequel trilogy, until stepping into today’s sequel trilogy films. As the trailer progresses into footage of the newest films, a voiceover from Luke is heard saying to whom we assume to be Rey “A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” Next we begin to see footage from The Rise of Skywalker and a distraught Rey in a lightsaber battle with Kylo Ren. Immediately after the clip cuts away from Rey and Kylo’s fight there’s a voiceover from Emperor Palpatine “Your journey…nears its end,” followed by the ominous breathing of Darth Vader and last but not least, Rey wielding a red double-bladed lightsaber!

This lightsaber is similar to Darth Maul’s but different in that it has the ability to fold in half. Throughout Star Wars Legends and current canon, the only Force users to ever use red blades are Sith and users of the Dark Side of The Force. Thus it’s almost a certainty that fans will see Rey fall to the Dark Side in Rise of Skywalker. We can only hope that like the legendary Jedi Knight, Revan, Rey finds a way to redeem herself and return to the light.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20.
