All Elite Wrestling crowned its first ever World Champion last night — Chris Jericho.
Jericho faced off against Hangman Adam Page at AEW’s All Out PPV Saturday evening at the Sears Center Arena in Chicago, Illinois. The match has been building since the AEW championship was first unveiled by WWE Hall of Famer Brett Hart at the Double or Nothing PPV in May of 2019. Page defeated a slew of opponents in a Casino Battle Royal to earn his spot in the match, while Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in singles competition to secure his position in the title bout.
After a long, bloody, and physical match — Jericho — covered in blood, finished off Page with his AEW exclusive finishing move, the Judas Effect. See the moment he hoisted the title below.
The results of the match don’t come as a surprise to most AEW fans, as many don’t feel that Page is ready for a World Title run. The expectation at-large for the fledgling company is that it would chose to use an established star like Chris Jericho to promote its brand and use his popularity with fans around the world to steal viewers away from WWE and NJPW. While Adam Page is without a doubt a talented wrestler, his name recognition and resume don’t hold a candle to the legend that is Chris Jericho.
At 48 years of age Jericho many have lost a step or two, but he’s still a huge star with the ability to entertain fans in and outside of the ring. Congratulations to Chris Jericho, as he becomes the first man to ever hold the AEW World Championship.
