Avengers #24 Review

The Challenge of the Ghost Riders is almost over, but raises more questions.

Last issue, we saw things start to get intense between Johnny and Robbie on this race. The stakes were already high, but in this issue it looks like there will be more than just Robbie’s brother at stake.  Here is the story arc that will help to launch a new Ghost Rider series, but big questions remain: who will stay a Ghost Rider? And will the Riders be on the side of good?  Let’s get into this issue.

Right away we see Robbie visiting the Ghost Riders of the past. I enjoy the designs of some of these characters and I’m glad to see that there is a purpose to Ghost Rider 1 million B.C.  As these Riders are talking to Robbie I love that some seeds are being planted and I hope that we get to see more of these hints explored later; especially with the idea of “other” Riders as Ghost Rider 1 million B.C. hints at.  The story then takes us topside as we see Cosmic Ghost Rider face off against the Avengers.  I will say that I thought it was great to see the heroes start to combine their power sets to make new moves — Gamma Lightning was awesome to see and if it could push around a Power Cosmic Spirit of Vengeance that is a mighty move and the power up that Black Panther made for Captain America’s costume was great. Now he can start absorbing kinetic energy.

Jason Aaron did a great job with keep Cosmic Ghost Rider’s voice in line with the character that has been established by Donny Cates.  The way Cosmic GR used his powers was great and I wonder if he got over the fear of Mjolnir or was that a possible oversight?  Remember that is what killed Cosmic GR in Thanos Wins.  It was interesting to see Robbie’s evil uncle Eli in this story arc and I just wonder how many of the strings are being pulled by him.  With this issue all of a sudden it felt like Johnny Blaze was a bad guy, which was majorly different then how I’ve seen him played off in other issues of this arc and the other guest appearances he has had.  So, for me the question with Johnny Blaze is he going evil?  Could it be Eli is manipulating him or could he be succumbing to the power of Hell?

It was nice to see Robbie really step up to do the right thing in this issue.  I almost felt like this arc could’ve been a way to write him off, but with a Hulu show coming I seriously doubt that.  Instead this might be a great way for him to lose the evil touch that his powers have from his uncle.  Cosmic Ghost Rider was talking about how he got pulled into the fight, so that gives me a clue that the Riders are being manipulated, but he really seemed to have a mad on for Johnny Blaze.  Then, in Hell, we see Eli using the Celestial as a body in order to slow Robbie down.

I can’t wait for next issue’s conclusion and to see how this all shakes out and leads to the new Ghost Rider series.  This issue really did a great job of moving the story along and also peeling back the curtain to get us wondering who the villain will be.

Is it good?

Cosmic Ghost Rider vs the Avengers was great
I like the mixed use of power sets between the Avengers
Some important aspects of what Cosmic Ghost Rider was talking about seemed left out, but maybe that was intentional?
8.5
Great
