‘World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ announced at Blizzcon 2019

Sylvanas has set Azeroth free.

World of Warcraft‘s eighth expansion is Shadowlands, announced today at Blizzcon 2019.

Shadowlands brings the Lich King back into focus, but for new or lapsed players, this isn’t Arthas, the Lich King you remember from Warcraft III. After the events of Wrath of the Lich King, former Alliance Regent Bolvar Fordragon took the mantle of the Lich King in secret. But thanks to Sylvanas Windrunner, Bolvar’s reign as king doesn’t last long…

Blizzard tells us that the Shadowlands is the source of the power of the Scourge and the power on which Death Knights draw. The Shadowlands are ancient, so much so that it even predates the Titans.

“These terrors and beauties were never meant for mortal eyes,” says an ominous voice during the gameplay trailer.

There’s also three new zones to explore: Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, and Bastion. As well as new dungeons and raids.

This announcement comes at a tumultuous time for both World of Warcraft and Blizzard on the whole. Players were largely dissatisfied with current expansion, Battle For Azeroth, from both gameplay and story perspectives, and the company at large is the subject of protests and cancelled subscriptions as a result of the blitzchung/Hong Kong controversy.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is currently set to release sometime in 2020. Its available for repurchase today.
