Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 Review

‘You had me at jellybeans.’

The team up of your childhood continues with issue #2 of this mini-series. The premiere issue was great, and thankfully, so is this one. I mean, it should be, right? It’s Ninja Turtles plus Power Rangers! Ryan Parrot, Simone di Meo, and Alessio Zonno have delivered an instant classic and everything was perfect about how they handled both properties. Let’s take a dive into this issue.

Ryan Parrot did an amazing job with the character voices, with Leonardo and Jason being prime examples. The leaders of their respective groups carried that leadership and compassion in their character voice and interactions with their teams.  The conversation pair-ups were just amazing: April O’Neil with Kimberly as they did research and investigation on the Foot Clan and locations, Zack with Michelangelo talking about their favorite pizza toppings ranging from pineapple to jelly beans (which was a great comical moment in the issue), and Donatello with Billy as they got their geek flex on. All the dialogue was just perfect.  Ryan did a great job with all the characters and I like that we are finally learning about Tommy’s reasoning for joining the Foot Clan.

Simone di Meo was joined by Alessio Zonno on the art for this issue and they kept the high standard that was delivered on the first issue.  Character expressions and body language were perfect for each individual, along with great character layouts creating dynamic scenes.  A major shoutout to the colorist team of Walter Baiamonte and Igor Monti for maintaining proper color with character and also making it bold enough to pop without distracting from the art.  I don’t want to spoil this for you, but there is a character with a power combination that combines the two properties and it is just amazing. The art team did phenomenal with this — toy customizers, you better get to work making this as a figure STAT!

This miniseries is shaping to be amazing and creating quite a conflict that is worthy of a team-up.  I hope this takes off like Batman/TMNT and we get multiple volumes of it.  I highly recommend this comic mini-series as you are getting two dynamic properties and a fantastic story with great art for the price of one comic.  Tell your local comic shop to set this aside for you if you are not getting this series — don’t even chance it trade waiting.

Is it good?
This is just the perfect mashup between two beloved properties. More insights into character and motivations are revealed along with dynamic art. This is a comic book that will put you in a good mood.
Very well written dialogue that stays in the tone of the characters
Large ensemble of characters, but everyone has great panel time
Killer art that continues the high standard put forth by the first issue
