EXCLUSIVE Valiant First Look: ‘Savage’ #1 pencils and inks by Nathan Stockman

Valiant Comics announced last week Savage #1 is coming back with writer Max Bemis and artist Nathan Stockman this June. The series, if you’re unfamiliar with the character, is about Kevin Sauvage who grew up on a remote island populated by bloodthirsty dinosaurs and terrifying marauders. Sounds rad right?

With the announcement came five pages of preview art for the book which blew fans away thanks to Stockman’s pencils and inks and Brian Reber’s colors. Underneath the pages of any comic lie incredibly detailed work in the pencils and inks before color is ever added and today courtesy of Valiant Comics we have a first look at Nathan Stockman’s work prior to colors.

Critically-acclaimed writer MAX BEMIS (Moon Knight) and energetic artist NATHAN STOCKMAN (Spidey) present a thrilling new series that’s packed with over-the-top action, animated artwork, and a massively entertaining and totally unpredictable story!

Kevin Sauvage, aka Savage, grew up on a remote island populated by bloodthirsty dinosaurs and terrifying marauders. The wild child knew only one thing: survival. Now, he’s living in London and has become a breakout viral sensation. As Savage learns to live in his new environment, a taste of home comes to London as dinosaurs invade the city! It’s time for Savage to do what he does best: hunt!

“SAVAGE is the biggest story I’ve ever told. As in it’s my aesthetic turned up to eleven and crammed into the skin of a summer blockbuster film,” said Max. “If you dig the more fun and up-tempo stuff I’ve done like Worst X-Man Ever, this is the book you’ve been waiting for.”

Working on SAVAGE is a dream come true for Nathan. “This series is everything I love about comics. It’s big
action, laughs, and a great story.” The exceptional artist added, “Every page has something I enjoy drawing and hopefully that energy will translate to the readers. I want them to have as much fun reading as I’m having drawing!”

Editor DAVID MENCHEL continues to be impressed by Max’s vision for this unique story. “Max is bringing brutality and humor together in a truly unique way, simultaneously delivering high octane thrills and deeply clever laughs.” David added that there’s no one better than Nathan to bring Max’s exciting script to life. “Nate has been turning in pages that perfectly balance the absurdity and violence in a way I didn’t think was possible. There’s no other team that could deliver this particular story as well as these guys are, and that message is loud and clear from page one all the way to page twenty.”

The dinosaur-hunting fun begins in SAVAGE #1 on June 17th, 2020, featuring colors by Brian Reber, letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou,and covers by Marcus To, Christian Ward, Stacey Lee, and Giuseppe Camuncoli.
