Sony unveils PlayStation 5 controller, ‘DualSense’

The PS5 controller features a new design, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers.

Sony has revealed the design for the PlayStation 5 controller, dubbed “DualSense,” on their blog today. Take a look below:

The design, while still somewhat familiar, is a departure from Sony’s usual controller design. The PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 all featured nearly identical controller designs — infamously, fan backlash to the proposed “boomerang” design of the PS3 controller caused Sony to backtrack. This new controller has many things in common with its PS4 predecessor, but also seems to borrow from Microsoft’s Xbox controllers in general shape.

CEO Jim Ryan explained the rationale for the new design:

DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.

In addition to new design and ergonomics, the controller will also feature haptic feedback, promising a much more precise vibration motor, and adaptive triggers. In addition, the “Share” button on the PS4 controller has been replaced with a “Create” button, though Sony was not ready to talk about that button’s functionality just yet.

PlayStation 5 is still scheduled for a holiday 2020 release, though the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may force Sony to push it back — several high-profile games from the company have been delayed already.
