Amazon delays its upcoming MMO, ‘New World’

COVID-19 is delaying the development by forcing devs to work from home.

Amazon Games Studios has announced that the release of their upcoming fantasy MMO New World will be delayed until August 25, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The studio cites unexpected challenges that have arisen from developing the game while the entire dev team is working remotely from home. Previously, Amazon planned to release New World on Windows PC in May.

New World Game Developer Scot Lane shared a video update on YouTube explaining the studio’s decision to delay.

“Like most of you, things have changed pretty dramatically for us in the way we work in live over these past few months,” said Game Director Scot Lane in a YouTube update post. “Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our entire team had to transition to working from home.”

“We’re still working hard and we’re making progress, but because game development is so collaborative and highly technical, the remote work situation has exposed some problems that we’re still trying to work through,” continued Lane. “As a result we’d have to make the difficult decision of pushing New World’s launch date to August 25, 2020. Our number one mission is to ship New World with the highest quality and we need to give ourselves enough time to do that while still keeping our team safe.”

New World is an MMO set in the 1600s in which players colonize a fictional undiscovered land modeled after British America during the early colonial era. The new unexplored land is filled with supernatural monsters, magic, and other dangers. New World is a team-based, PVP survival game with strong elements of exploration, crafting, and resource collection.
