In an exclusive report by James Whitbrook of io9, it was revealed that BOOM! Studios will be releasing a Firefly graphic novel examining the life and death of Serenity pilot Hoban “Wash” Wasburn.
Firefly: Watch How I Soar will be written by Ethan Young and feature artwork by Jorge Corona. According to a press release from BOOM! Studios, the book will explore what flashed through Wash’s mind immediately following the soul-crushing moment he was speared by Reavers in the Serenity film.
The press release states:
“As Wash’s life flashes before his eyes, he revisits the most important, never-before-revealed moments in his life, from growing up on a planet so ravaged by pollution that no star could shine in the sky to meeting the woman of his dreams in Zoë Alleyne, who would become his wife and create a life with him beyond his wildest imagination.”
“And in those final moments, Wash will reach out to connect with a surprising someone he never thought possible…proving that some bonds transcend this mortal coil.”

In his report, Whitbrook states that Firefly fans have never gotten over Wash’s death. As a loyal Browncoat myself, I can confirm that he is 100% correct. Wash was my favorite character in one of my all-time favorite series. His death in Serenity was completely unexpected and still ranks as one of the most jarring moments I’ve ever experienced while watching a movie.
Considering BOOM! Studios’ excellent track record handling the Firefly universe and the great creative team, this book is an absolute must-buy. Revisiting the moment we lost Wash might be painful, but it’ll be great getting to see how his life unfolded before joining the crew of the Serenity.
Firefly: Watch How I Soar is set to be released this November.
