Nintendo announces surprise ‘Super Mario Maker 2’ updates

The World Maker Update adds the ability to create overworlds and over a dozen new gameplay additions.

Nintendo announced a World Maker Update today via YouTube, showing off a slew of new features that will be added to Super Mario Maker 2 on Wednesday, April 22.

The most notable new feature in the update is the titular World Maker, which allows the player to link multiple courses together through an overworld map. The map is fully customizable, can be one of several themes, and can feature warp pipes and bonus games. Players can even name their map whatever they want. Nintendo has essentially built in the building blocks for full fledged Mario ROM hack games within Mario Maker 2.

Besides the overworld map, there are a number of new features being added to gameplay:

  • SMB2 Mushroom: Changes Mario into Super Mario Bros. 2 Mario, enabling the player to ride enemies and pick them up (Super Mario Bros. game style only)
  • Frog Suit: Changes Mario into Frog Mario, enabling the player to swim faster and run on top of water (Super Mario Bros. 3 game style only)
  • Power Balloon: Enables the player to float in the air for a short period of time (Super Mario World game style only)
  • Super Acorn: Turns Mario into Flying Squirrel Mario, enabling the player to glide through the air (New Super Mario Bros. U game style only)
  • Boomerang Flower: Allows the player to throw a boomerang, damaging enemies (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Cannon Box: Allows the player to shoot cannons (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Propeller Box: Allows the player to fly three times higher than normal (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Red POW Box: Turns Mario into a POW Box, enabling the player to unleash a POW three times (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Goomba Mask: Turns Mario into a goomba, enabling the player to walk past enemies undetected (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Bullet Bill Mask: Turns Mario into a Bullet Bill, enabling the player to fly horizontally until time expires (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Koopalings: New bosses based on the seven elite members of Bowser’s army (Not compatible with Super Mario 3D World game style)
  • Cursed Key: Causes a Phanto to chase any player who picks it up (Super Mario Bros. game style only)
  • On/Off Trampoline: Switch-activated trampolines (Super Mario 3D World game style only)
  • Mechakoopas: Wind-up enemies that can be picked up and thrown (Super Mairo World game style only)

Sadly, the video also mentions that this will be the final update to Super Mario Maker 2. That’s unfortunate, but Nintendo has released a steady stream of updates to the game since its release last summer, and has plenty of content to keep level creators busy for years to come.

Super Mario Maker 2‘s World Maker Update will be available for download on April 22.
