Diamond is set to sell comics again this Wednesday so to celebrate, we include two superhero shows in our Channel Surfing TV Picks this week. Stargirl is joining the Arrowverse this week and will eventually bring with her the Justice Society of America. A Japanese export hits Disney+ with a second season of a Marvel anime. Then, if you like your horror with a touch of British imperialism, catch the Indian zombie series, Betaal.
A New Justice Society of America
We may have said good bye to Arrow this year but the shared superhero universe it helped create is still thriving. Stargirl will be the newest program based off of a DC property. The person behind the original character, Geoff Johns, is attached as the show’s creator, an executive producer and a writer.
Courtney Whitmore is an unassuming teenager who moves to Nebraska after her mother remarries. She soon discovers the Cosmic Staff that grants her special abilities and her stepdad, who used to be a sidekick, trains her in the ways of being a superhero. As Stargirl, Whitmore rallies other young heroes to confront villains of yore. The series will first air Monday, May 18, on DC Universe. The next day, it can be seen on the CW.
Marvel Anime Fun
Marvel Future Avengers is an anime television series that first aired in Japan. Last February, the show’s first season came stateside when it arrived on Disney+. This Friday, May 22, the second season will be available on the streaming service.
The story follows three teenagers who were genetically modified by Hydra and granted super powers. They were to be the terrorist organization’s weapons to aid in their evil plans. The trio learn they’re on the wrong side and quickly ally with the Avengers. Under the tutelage of the legendary group, they are groomed to be the next generation of heroes.
Undead British Colonialism
Netflix is known for mining globally for new content to add to their streaming service. One of their latest international additions is a horror-thriller series from India.
Betaal takes place in a remote village where the Counter Insurgency Police Force is sent in to displace its inhabitants in order to make way for a new highway. In the process the soldiers uncover an ancient curse and must face a two-century-old East India Colonel and his battalion of vicious zombie redcoats. Betaal will be available on Netflix this Sunday, May 24.
