Today, Image made a surprise announcement that they’ll be releasing a Walking Dead one-shot issue in July entitled Negan Lives.
This 36-page black and white issue is written and drawn by regular, beloved team of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. It will follow Negan as he attempts to adjust to the new world we last saw in The Walking Dead #174. The press release states:
Spurned by a slowly rebuilding society, Negan lives a life of desperate isolation… or does he? In the tradition of Here’s Negan, this all-new story in Negan Lives #1 gives readers a glimpse into what has happened to one The Walking Dead‘s most popular characters in the time since his last appearance in The Walking Dead #174.
As long-time readers of the post-apocalyptic survival series will recall, The Walking Dead #174 proved to be a pivotal point for Negan, as he was tracked down and confronted by a vengeful Maggie, still heartbroken and furious over the murder of her husband, Glenn, in The Walking Dead #100.
To call this announcement a “pleasant surprise” would be a gross understatement. So why did Image and Kirkman/Adlard decide to do it?
According to Kirkman, the issue is meant as a way to help the direct market while it continues to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus shutdown. To that end, Image and the Walking Dead team are putting their money where their mouths are: 100% of all sales will go toward the local comic shops that sell the issue, which will not be available digitally.
There will also be extremely rare gold and silver foil variants for those who are interested in that sort of thing. As far as I’m concerned, however, it’ll just nice getting a new comic from this creative on this series — especially when I know that buying it will helping my local comic shop even more than a regular purchase would.
Negan Lives #1 goes on sale July 1. There will be limited copies, so make sure to preorder with your LCS if you want one!
