This October, The Walking Dead comic series will begin re-releasing all of its 193 issues (and hopefully the specials) in full color.
The news was announced by series creator/writer Robert Kirkman during Skybound Xpo’s livestream event today. You can watch the entire stream below or skip ahead to the section featuring Kirkman and AMC producer David Alpert at 1:39:03. (The color comic news begins at approximately 1:12:00).
The re-released series, entitled The Walking Dead Deluxe, will see colorist Dave McCraig doing full color fills over Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard’s original black & white pencils. Each issue will also include new content in the form of a “Cutting Room Floor” section featuring Kirkman’s commentary and abandoned storylines/plot points.
As if that weren’t cool enough, the series will also feature variant covers from the likes of David Finch, Tony Moore, Julian Totino Tedesco, and Arthur Adams along with new covers by Adlard and Moore.
The first issue of The Walking Dead Deluxe will go on sale on October 7 with two more issues released monthly starting in November. Image/Skybound says there are no plans to collect the series in trade or hardcovers any time soon, so single issues might be the only way to get the series in color.
If I’m being honest, I initially had no intention of picking these up. Then I saw the incredible interior preview images (included below) and my resolve weakened considerably. The series will also be available digitally, so this could be a fun way to start beefing up my own digital library (depending on the price, of course).
I’m ultimately still undecided, but this series would be a fantastic way for someone who hasn’t read The Walking Dead comic to jump on and enjoy the single issue format ride.
Will you be checking out The Walking Dead Deluxe when it hits this fall?
