Today, at the Comic-Con@Home Image Comics panel, the publisher announced Crossover, a new series that was hyped a few weeks ago. Cates said Crossover is the most exciting thing he’s ever done and that, “Crossover is the scariest god damn book I’ve ever attempted to produce.” The new series is in collaboration with Geoff Shaw.
The basics are, as Cates said, “Imagine Avengers: Endgame, but as Cloverfield.” He said the story started in 2017 as an “anti-event event” series told from the point of view of an everyday person. He did say it’s not an attack on comic books but a celebration of what comic books can be and what the art form can be. “If you want to come for a fun story,” Cates said, “That’s absolutely there for you.” He went on to say there is deeper storytelling going on too.
The premise is basically, what if the line-wide comics company event got so epic, a portal opened in the sky and it collapsed into our actual world. “A world where you and I actually exist,” Cates said. He went on to say it’s a quest series like Dark Tower or Lord of the Rings in order to get to the “Crossover ground zero where everyone is.” It’s a book Cates said makes a lot of promises and one he hopes folks will come back to each month to see if they can pull it off.
