John Cena’s Peacemaker receives new series on HBO Max

James Gunn will write the recently announced HBO Max series that explores the origin of John Cena’s Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad.

We received a look at John Cena’s Peacemaker in the upcoming film The Suicide Squad at DC FanDome. Though the movie won’t be released until next year, we’ll already be receiving more stories featuring the wrestler turned actor’s character.

Peacemaker received his own straight to order series to be shown on HBO Max. The action-adventure-comedy show will explore the origins of the character who is a master of weapons and believes in peace at any cost – no matter how many people he must kill to achieve it.

The program will consist of eight episodes all written by The Suicide Squad’s director, James Gunn, with Cena reprising his role from the film. Gunn will also direct several episodes including the first. Peacemaker is set to begin production in early 2021 before Gunn starts working on the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.

About the upcoming series, Gunn said:

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.

Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers with Cena as a co-executive producer. Peacemaker will be produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company along with Warner Bros. Television.

Don’t forget to catch Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad when it arrives August 6, 2021.
