Welcome to another installment of 31 Days of Halloween! This is our chance to set the mood for the spookiest and scariest month of the year as we focus our attention on horror and Halloween fun. For the month of October we’ll be sharing various pieces of underappreciated scary books, comics, movies, and television to help keep you terrified and entertained all the way up to Halloween.
Making its North American premiere at the Nightstream Film Festival, Bloody Hell is a high energy comedy horror. The movie follows A man named Rex after a botched robbery attempt has him leave for Helsinki. But has he just traded in one Hell for another? It is clear early on Bloody Hell is going to contain a chaotic spirit. The opening is reminiscent of a music video or something from a Harley Quinn movie. Heavy guitars play as the credits colorfully pop on the screen. It is a surprising beginning that captures the audience off guard.
This continues throughout the movie. Many stories are based around things continuing to get worse for the protagonist. Bloody Hell uses this same foundation effectively. It constantly surprises. One delightful surprise is Bloody Hell is a very funny movie. It is over the top as is the case with most horror comedies. The premise is ridiculous, as well. This can be risky as it prevents things from being taken seriously.
That is never the case here. Even as things become increasingly grotesque and traumatic, Bloody Hell never turns the audience away. This includes the most romantic wound cleansing scene this side of Lethal Weapon 3. Ben O’Toole is great in a double role (sorta). Bloody Hell requires the actor to play the role of a bad ass action hero. He is funny, tough, and always seems to have an answer. Yet, he also has something of a sensitive side. It is just buried deep down.
The themes of PTSD the story adds is done bluntly and conversely with care. It is done in a neat way that adds humor and depth to Rex and Bloody Hell. The story never makes a joke of Rex’s situation and seamlessly integrates it into the film. The story itself is straight and to the point. Over the course of Bloody Hell, there are revelations that are in line with this type of horror movie. It is the minor details that make the film work so well.
Bloody Hell is a comedy horror that constantly keeps the audience on their toes. The Evil Dead influences are obvious, but this is no retread. It is a fun movie that stands on its own. The movie is action packed, violent, and silly plus has an engaging story that is impossible to look away from.
