‘Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death’ #2 review

There is simple and unique brevity and joy that happens within each page of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death #2.

In the second installment of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death, the book unravels into the pure zany territory, holding onto the irreverent tone that Gerard Way has always upheld throughout Umbrella Academy. Simon and Ray manage to create their own narrative rhythm, keenly focused on details and parts of the world that have to get sacrificed within the scope of a more expansive plot like those found in its parent book. Throughout the plots of vampires and glamorous Hollywood parties, there were these unique moments of a character who needed to check his blood pressure, or the fact that the main villain is a vampiric monkey. Instead of understanding his purpose, we understand that he really enjoys some good fabric to wear.

Artist and colorist I.N.J. Culbard magnifies each page with a unique energy that carries the flow of the reader into each panel with magnificent ease. Simple line art manages to depict this wonderfully rendered world with great fervor. Alongside this, the additional lines always give a new flavor to the panels and really capture the attention of a reader with each alteration on the page. Even more is the unique coloring: certain greens accentuate the different characters on the page, helping to have unique tones offset certain areas. Everything ensures that they capture the book’s tone perfectly.

Letterer Nate Piekos from Blambot does a wonderful job doing the lettering this book. The different bolded letters really capture the emphasis given through a voice. Some of the unique bubbles added to the series allows for these cool moments where the characters emote as if their voices were audible.

There is simple and unique brevity and joy that happens within each page of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death #2. It’s a fun romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and allows for an enjoyable read.
