Few comics have managed to be a pure example of how powerful this medium is as well as Sex Criminals, the brainchild of acclaimed writer Matt Fraction, and at the time, newbie letterer and illustrator Chip Zdarsky. Fast forward to our present day, and this series has managed to show the strength in these two titans steering the helm of this book. Matt Fraction has taken what was a pretty immature premise and added a wonderful depth into the lives of people and how they connect with one another.
Sex Criminals doesn’t just go for the easy joke (though there are plenty of easy jokes — I mean, look no further than the final issue of the series being #69, even though the previous issue was only #30), but allows readers to ponder how they interact with the real world. Zdarsky adds plenty of details that have consistently proven how great of an artist he is, each adding a Where’s Waldo-like splendor to certain pages as readers look for each hidden joke within the pages.

On top of that, there is this wonderful simplicity to the line art that allows for easy following in the visual storytelling. Alongside this, the lettering with unique caption boxes and spacing of certain dialogue really keeps the book at an easy to read pace.
Fans of this series really couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion, allowing us the chance to see these characters move past their initial story and really look at how these people have grown past where they started. Some of them are reminiscent, but most are looking forward and finding new ways to be better versions of themselves.
More than just a collection of sex jokes, Zdarsky and Fraction have crafted a wonderful series dedicated to the relationships people have with one another in Sex Criminals. It’s a beautiful rendering of characters that give us perspective into our own interior lives.
