Hellboy movie 2019 One:12 Collective action figure review

The Hellboy movie 2019 One:12 Collective is a figure that honors David Harbour’s turn as the famous character created by Mike Mignola.

Mezco Toyz has begun to ship the Hellboy One:12 Collective action figure this week and it’s a beauty. Modeled after David Harbour from the 2019 Hellboy film, the figure stands 6.6 inches tall and comes with a variety of hands, a briefcase, two guns, and a horseshoe. Customary of all One:12 Collective figures, he has a fabric costume with a few surprises underneath it all. At $80 it’s a higher-priced figure, but is it worth it?

This is a high-quality figure with great detailing in the head sculpt, paint, and clothing. The muscles in the body come out, even more, thanks to the paint job. The eyes are orange and without error. Stitching on the coat and pants are expert and close to as real looking as possible. You may need to extend your suspension of disbelief a tad since the switches can’t get quite small enough given the size of the figure, but it’s close enough.

The coat also has some wiring to allow for a variety of poses. Articulation is great throughout the figure from the torso joint to the arms and legs. The head can’t turn quite as much as other figures due to the long plastic hair, but it’s good enough.

Details in the belt are particularly nice. The detailing makes it look like leather and the gold makes the glyphs pop nicely. The chain is plastic, but it’s detailed enough not to matter since it won’t be moving.

There aren’t a lot of accessories, but what they do offer is what you’ll need. He comes with two guns both of which are quite similar to each other. Hellboy has three large hands, one for grabbing and two fists. His regular-sized hand comes with hands for shooting and gripping. The briefcase is possibly the coolest accessory which looks very close to a real wooden briefcase. The detailing is exceptional. The horseshoe is well done too, though it’s so small it’s hard to not see this getting lost quickly. As with all One12:Collective figures, this comes with a stand with a Hellboy themed base.

Possibly the biggest downside to this figure is it’s based on a universally panned film that bombed. That said, who doesn’t love David Harbour? I wouldn’t be surprised if someone tries to use the head on this figure to make a Stranger Things figure of their own. Another disappointment is the tale which is posable and can bend, but can’t turn so you’ll be leaving the tail pointed towards for the most part.

This isn’t the only Hellboy on the market as Dark Horse Direct released a Hellboy figure based on the comic books earlier this year. Though it’s sold out, you can find it on eBay or Amazon with a fluctuated price. How do they compare? Since they are based on different versions of Hellboy it might come down to taste, but the Mezco Toyz figure has a few plusses like the bendable tail (the Dark Horse Direct figure’s tail pops off rather easily), more realistic features like his boots and pants, and head.

The Dark Horse Direct Hellboy beats the Mezco Toyz figure with a few things like a much more dramatic giant right hand with movable fingers, a real chain cross, a sword, and a rubber body that doesn’t have an obvious chest joint. The styles are so wildly different I suspect it won’t be hard for folks to decide on which one they want, though.

Back 2 Back!

Overall I’m happy with this figure although it’s a bit of a bummer it’s based on a film that won’t be getting a sequel anytime soon. The details are incredibly well done though and it’s a must-have for anyone who wants to collect the somewhat new, but already exceptional line of Hellboy action figures created to date.

Well painted, sculpted, and tailored...which is standard from One12:Collective figures
Well made accessories and just enough to feel like you're getting your money's worth
Details in the boots, belt, and accessories is exceptional
The tail can't turn making the bendability somewhat limited
Based on a movie that didn't do so hot and will likely never get a sequel so collectors may feign interest

Great
