Heroes at Home is a new mini-comic from Marvel Comics featuring adventures of our favorite heroes while they quarantine during the pandemic. Many of the stories were originally published on Marvel social media, some of which garnered millions of likes. Originally published from July to August, the series is now printed and purchasable in its 5.05 x 0.45 x 5.05 inches. That’s right, this comic is tiny!
Written by Zeb Wells with art by Gurihiru, this book is super cute, featuring Spider-Man doing chores around the house and Wolverine using his claws to make a puzzle of his friends. Made up of eight stories, this book takes on Spider-Man, Captain America, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Venom, Thor, Hulk, and Wolverine. A few of these stories originally published as variant covers as well, which you can see below.
In fact, you can find the full story for Hulk, Black Panther, Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man in variant covers released over the summer. That leaves Thor and Venom as the only original stories in this collection. Given the brevity of each story, it doesn’t add a lot to the reading experience, but they’re certainly cute. In the Thor story, Odinson needs a haircut and figures out to do it on his own. In the Venom story, Eddie ends up using the Symbiote to clean all his messes up until he discovers he’s out of toilet paper. You can guess what happens next. That might be the edgiest story of the bunch as these are all all-ages friendly tales.
As you can guess from those descriptions, this is a comic about enduring quarantine. When these were released they were assuredly a blessing for kiddos and adults alike as they show superheroes facing the same problem of staying inside mostly alone. In that, this collection succeeds not only in providing a little humor, but to help folks relate to their favorite heroes in a new way.
The art by Gurihiru is super fun, maximizing every panel in a simple way that feels fresh. Each page is devoted to a single panel, making this book a very unique reading experience. Gurihiru’s art is great, but at only 80 (tiny) pages this is also a super-fast read. Given the size though, I imagine many will purchase this for kiddos and thus the readability is high. It’s a fun little book to flip through.
Heroes at Home is a delightful respite from the stresses of today. While short, it also offers unique stories you simply do not see in the comics. Like all of us, superheroes are dealing with the pandemic in their own way and this tiny book delivers.
