‘Runaways’ #35 is a surprising installment with huge implications for the future of the series

‘Runaways’ #35 wraps up the Molly on Krakoa plot and has a shocking reveal that will leave readers speechless.

Over the years, Runaways has turned into a series that’s like the comic equivalent of candy: it’s sugar sweet and you just can’t get enough of it. The new arc was highly anticipated because of Molly’s mutant status being brought up again in the age of the Krakoan X-Men, and although the story has taken a turn, plenty of other surprises are in store for Runaways fans in this issue.

The opening pages quell a few fears many Nico and Karolina fans had after the last issue, opening with a statement that admittedly isn’t untrue for Nico but does show her growth. The forthcoming pages are pretty interesting character growth for Nico and show that her arc is only about to get more exciting following the path Rowell has put forth for her powers. It’s totally new ground for Nico Minoru — it’s a great time to be a fan of hers.

Runaways thrives as a series in its found family premise and during the 2017 run, the title has really transformed what a family unit we see in comics is. Nico and Chase are Molly’s guardians, though they aren’t romantic at all — Nico and Karolina are. It’s hard to think of another mainstream title that’s done something like this and provided such a unique family dynamic. And, of course, Molly’s family is at the heart of this story. Runaways fans will likely be pleased with the outcome of Molly’s Krakoa predicament.

The final pages are what really provide the biggest shocker, as Chase’s new date is revealed. The implications here are huge and it certainly will have rippling effects on the series moving forward. Yes, you’ll find out just why Marvel didn’t even release a cover image for issue #36 in their solicitations after this issue.

The issue is standard fare for what to expect from Rowell and Genolet’s Runaways quality-wise — if you’ve enjoyed the series thus far, you’ll likely enjoy this installment. Though the story moving forward seems poised to only become more and more interesting.
