The film, which is expected to land with Amazon Studios, will star Golden Globe nominee Elsie Fisher in the lead role opposite Amiah Miller. Cathy Ang and Rachel Ogechi Kanu will play major supporting roles, as well.
The script was penned by writer/actor Jenna Lamia, who will also serve as associate producer. Killing Eve‘s Damon Thomas is set to direct.
The novel, which takes place in 1988, centers around the rift that forms between two best friends as they’re entering high school. In addition to the normal social drifting that happens when people get older, Abby (Elsie Fisher) begins to suspect that Gretchen (Amiah Miller) is also being possessed by a demonic force.
And look: I totally get if that doesn’t sound like your thing. I ignored Goodread’s algorithm recommending the book to me for months until I finally caved. 48 hours after starting it, I’d finished reading what is still one of my favorite horror novels of all time. In my review, I provided detailed instructions on how to achieve the novel’s unlikely-yet-brilliant tone:
Mix a glass of ‘Sixteen Candles’ and ‘Mean Girls,’ spike it two shots of ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘The Last Exorcism,’ and you get ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism.’
That being said, I’m not sure any other author could achieve the uniquely terrifying, hilarious, and emotionally powerful experience that Grady Hendrix did. As long as the film stays reasonably faithful to the source material, we should be in for a real treat with this one.
