DC Comics celebrates 80 years of Wonder Woman with new and free series

Today, DC Comics has revealed their plans to celebrate Wonder Woman’s 80th anniversary and it includes a massive line-up of releases. New titles start dropping in September and will release through October.

Kicking things off is a 400 plus page hardcover Wonder Woman: 80 Years of the Amazon Warrior which will release September 14, 2021. Wonder Woman is getting the same treatment as Detective Comics and Action Comics which both received similar celebratory books. Similar to those hardcovers, this book will feature Wonder Woman’s first appearance, features stories by acclaimed creators like George Pérez, Phil Jimenez, William Moulton Marston, Harry G. Peter, Joye Hummel, Jill Thompson, Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott, and new essays and interviews about Wonder Woman including stars like Gal Gadot, Lynda Carter, Patty Jenkins, and Trina Robbins.

Headlining the celebration is Wonderful Women of the World which will feature 23 pioneering real-world women from around the world and how they have taken up the mantle Wonder Woman has inspired for decades. Those real-world women include Beyoncé, Serena Williams, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Greta Thunberg, and Malala Yousafzai, amongst others. That’s out on September 28th.

DC Comics celebrates 80 years of Wonder Woman with new and free series

DC Comics has had their fair share of 80th anniversaries of late, from Joker, Catwoman, Detective Comics, and Green Arrow. Today, DC announced Wonder Woman is getting a 100-page spectacular on October 5, 2021, which will feature an anthology of stories about the character. The creators attached is verifiably some of the best in the business including Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Jordie Bellaire, Mark Waid, Tom King, Steve Orlando, G. Willow Wilson, Amy Reeder, Vita Ayala and Stephanie Phillips, and artists Jim Cheung, Paulina Ganucheau, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Joe Prado, Amy Reeder, Evan “Doc” Shaner, Isaac Goodheart, Laura Braga, Marcio Takara, and Meghan Hetrick.

Also out October 5th, Nubia & The Amazons launches from writers Vita Ayala, Stephanie Williams, and artist Alitha Martinez.

What’s Nubia & The Amazons about?

After the thrilling events of Infinite Frontier, Nubia becomes queen of Themyscira, but the new title also brings challenges. With the unexpected arrival of new Amazons, our hero is forced to reckon with her past and forge a new path forward for her sisters. Little does she know, a great evil grows beneath the island and it’s up to this former guardian of Doom’s Doorway to unite her tribe before paradise is lost forever!

Wonder Woman Nubia & The Amazons

Wonder Woman: Adventures of Young Diana Special will be available on October 12th which collects Jordie Bellaire and Paulina Ganucheau’s Eisner Award-winning backup stories for the first time. It’s an intimate look into Wonder Woman’s upbringing and the secrets of her past.

Then on October 19th, DC Comics launches Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez. Subsequent issues will launch in the spring and autumn of 2022 with art by Gene Ha and Nicola Scott.

What’s Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons about?

Millennia ago, Queen Hera and the goddesses of the Olympian pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts… and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things, but their existence could not stay secret for long. When a despairing woman named Hippolyta crossed the Amazons’ path, a series of events was set in motion that would lead to an outright war in heaven—and the creation of the Earth’s greatest guardian!

If you’re a fan of free, DC Comics has got you covered too. On October 19th, DC Comics will release free special editions of Wonder Woman #1 by Greg Rucka and Liam Sharp, Wonder WOman: Tempest Tossed, and Diana Princess of the Amazons.

Then of course, throughout October DC Comics will continue to release their Wonder Woman ongoing series including Wonder Woman #780 out October 12th, Wonder Woman Black & Gold #5, and Wonder Girl #6 on October 26th.

Tomasi, Kurt Busiek, Sanya Anwar, Trung Le Nguyen, and Josie Campbell, with art by Christian Alamy, Ben Dewey, Sanya Anwar, Trung Le Nguyen, and Carlos D’anda.

In the latest issue written by Joëlle Jones with art by Leila del Duca, after encountering Wonder Girl and Artemis, Yara believes now more than ever that she needs to find her lost sisters. Only they hold the answers to the trauma of her past and fear of the future. Is Yara a hero? Or is she a weapon of the gods wielded to destroy all Amazons?
