Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 08/09/2021

Our Channel Surfing TV picks feature Big Two comic series.

It’s a big superhero week with all of our Channel Surfing TV picks featuring series from the Big Two properties. First, Courtney spent too much time saving the day and not enough studying so she must attend summer school in DC’s Stargirl. Sometimes, one change can alter the outcome of everything so the MCU asks the titular question, What If…? in its new animated show. Finally, another team featuring DC’s young characters heads to Gotham in the third season of Titans.

New Adversaries and Allies

DC’s Stargirl brought a version of the Justice Society of America to the small screen led by the titular character. Although they experienced growing pains while learning how to function as a team, they were able to get their act together when it mattered most and defeated their rivals, the supervillain group, the Injustice Society of America.

However, the team can’t rest on their laurels because there will always be other threats. In the new season that begins this week, the JSA will come face to face with the Shade and Eclipso. At least they’ll gain new allies to help the including Jakeem Thunder and Jade. But maybe the biggest struggle they will all face is summer school.

The season 2 premiere of DC’s Stargirl airs Tuesday, August 10, on The CW.

Endless Possibilities

What If is a Marvel comic book anthology series that imagines how different the world would be if key moments in the universe’s history didn’t occur. Now, the brand has taken this concept and applied it to the MCU for its latest Disney+ series. New stories will be introduced featuring some of your favorite movie characters and they will involve different intriguing situations with a little bit of familiarity.

The first season will consist of nine episodes and many of the film talent return to lend their voices. The trailer only offers a glimpse of what’s in store from Super Soldier Peggy Carter, T’Challa as Star-Lord, and zombified Avengers. What other ways will the animated program flip the script? We’ll have to wait and see.

The series premiere of What If…? is Wednesday, August 11, on Disney+.

A Bat-Family Reunion

When we last left Titans, the group decided to split up following the loss of one of their own. Well, it seems that another tragedy will be responsible for bringing them back together. After the fall of a close Batman ally, the team converges on Gotham seeking justice.

While there, the Titans come into contact with several familiar comic faces including Barbara Gordon, Scarecrow, and the Red Hood. Former teammate, Jason Todd, assumes the mantle of the Red Hood and is hell-bent on taking his old colleagues down.

The third season of Titans begins when the first three episodes debut Thursday, August 12, on HBO Max.
