Disney+ developing ‘Werewolf by Night’ Halloween special

Will fans get an adaptation of ‘Werewolf by Night’ on Disney+ in 2022?

According to The Wrap, Marvel Studios has a new Disney+ special in the works centered around last year’s Werewolf by Night. Clearly too early for a premiere this Halloween, but who knows really, the studio is looking for Latino male in their 30s to star in the Special, which will begin production in early 2022 for a Halloween 2022 release date.

Last year’s comic book series, written by Taboo and B. Earl both of whom joined the AIPT Comics podcast last Sunday to discuss the series, the special could be a great way to expand on the story for a wider audience outside of comics. It’s a particularly good time for it since it features Native characters.

“I’m half-Hopi and half-Mexican, so we pulled a lot from my personal experience to implement that in our storytelling,” Taboo told Marvel Host Ryan Penagos last year. “The cool thing about this story is that although there’s a Native perspective to it, it’s not a Native story. This kid is dealing with becoming a werewolf and it’s inclusive to everyone and there’s bits and pieces for everyone to take away their own personal motivation.”

Originally created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, Marvel Comics wrapped up the four-issue series back in January. Take a look at the trailer for the comic book series below, which gives a good sense of how cool a Halloween special could be.

Fans took to Twitter yesterday to share their support of a Werewolf by Night adaptation and went as far as to suggest Taboo play the lead part. Many shared the graphic below which melded Taboo’s face with that from art from the comic book.

This news is also an interesting development for Disney+, which has mostly used Marvel properties for miniseries like Loki and Wandavision.

Could Disney+ be expanding its adaptations for holiday specials throughout the year? Stay tuned to AIPT as we get new information about this rumored project.
