Marvel’s Midnight Suns shows off its gameplay

Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG from the developers of XCOM releasing next year.

Today Marvel showed us our first glimpse at gameplay for the upcoming Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Revealed last week at Gamescom, Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG from developer Firaxis Games, famous for the Civilization and XCOM series.

Midnight Suns will feature the customizable player character Hunter being revived by the Avengers in an effort to take down the mother of all demons Lilith — who also happens to be the Hunter’s mother. The Hunter will be able to explore The Abbey, a hub akin to Dragon Age‘s Skyhold, where they’ll be able to develop their relationships with other Marvel heroes. Blade, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, Magik, Nico Minoru, and Wolverine are confirmed to be along for the ride with the player’s Hunter.

Combat is described as a “cinematic tactical affair that rewards clever thinking with superhero flair.” Strategy is at the heart of the game. During each encounter, players will be given a random set of abilities (like a hand of cards) for their heroes to use to devastate the enemies. Forming friendships with the fellow heroes in the Abbey is key and can lead to powerful upgrades.

Don’t worry, however, about loot boxes infecting the game. While Midnight Suns will have a card system for combat, no microtransactions will be apart of the gameplay. Instead, only cosmetics will be available for purchase, according to the game’s official Twitter account.

Midnight Suns is expected to drop next March for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Check out the gameplay reveal and gameplay walkthrough trailers below.
