Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro’s Fan First Wednesday

Some amazing Star Wars figures were revealed today…not so much for the Black Series, though.

In a surprising turn of events, Hasbro’s most recent Star Wars livestream revealed some fantastic items for the 3.75″ scale Vintage Collection toyline. The 6″ scale Black Series, on the other hand, was uncharacteristically poor showing.

Let’s start with the Vintage Collection first and save the ‘Black Series Repackapalooza’ for the end. Oh, and before you ask, they did not discuss the upcoming 6″ scale HasLab Rancor.

The following three figures will be available for preorder from your preferred online retailers on Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT. They are expected to arrive in Spring of 2022. The figures will also retail for $13.99, which is a slight price increase, but not unexpected considering the recent Black Series price hike.

Vintage Collection Bib Fortuna

If you happened to be within earshot of me, then you may very well hear the sound of a grown man weeping with joy.

In all seriousness though, Star Wars collectors have needed an updated 3.75″ Bib Fortuna for a very long time. The figures from the last couple of decades have been downright awful, but this figure looks incredible. Combine that with the fact that he makes up part of the original Kenner figure assortment, and this will make an exceptional addition to your Sail Barge and/or Jabba’s Palace crew.

Vintage Collection Lobot

Lobot is another member of the original Kenner assortment that was in dire need of an upgrade. Not as dire as Bib Fortuna, but it’s still a very needed/welcome addition to the Vintage Collection line.

I’m not sure which I love more–the 1970’s/early 1980’s aesthetic or the incredible facial portrait.

Vintage Collection Emperor Palpatine

We’ve gotten some good super-articulated iterations of Emperor Palpatine over the last couple decades, including a Vintage Collection one. This figure, however, is from his appearance in Return of the Jedi, which makes him the third new addition to the original Kenner assortment. And for those of you who are big on the Vintage Collection numbering, this one gets the milestone #200 designation.

It’s a bit disappointing that the only head we get is his angry/constipated one and not the smug look he had for most of his scenes. Also, if this release means that there won’t be a non-exclusive way to get the Emperor with his throne, then a lot of folks are going to be grumpy–myself included.

What’s going to make a lot of fans happy is this next item.

Vintage Collection Stormtrooper 4-pack

Good lord…how has Hasbro not been doing these already?

Stormtroopers are the definition of army builder figures, but the most recent releases (which are very good) have proven to be near impossible to find. Most folks likely would have been happy with a pack featuring three regular troopers, but the addition of a squad leader is wonderful.

As if this wasn’t cool enough, the Hasbro team said that they plan to do even more of these packs in the future. Hopefully that includes some clone trooper squadrons.

The Vintage Collection Stormtooper 4-pack will retail for $41.99. It will be available for preorder exclusively from Hasbro Pulse and ShopDisney.com on Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT with an expected arrival in Spring of 2022.

The next set of reveals are carbonized versions of previously released figures. These won’t be available for preorder until October 7 with an expected arrival in Spring of 2022. They will also retail for $18.99 (!) and be exclusively available from eBay Walmart.

So yeah…a definite pass for me. Here’s a look at them if you’re interested, though.

Next up is some general news about the Vintage Collection, including a fantastic slate of upcoming figures along with a very odd marketing decision.

HasLab RazorCrest Update

Shipping has been delayed to January 2022 (BOO!). The Hasbro team did get to show off the beautiful/nostalgia-inducing box art, though.

Vintage Collection Razor Crest

Antoc Merrick X-Wing

It’s still coming out…and it’s still a Target exclusive…but there won’t be any preorders. Instead, the the set will become available when it actually hits the shelves.

I know there might be a knee jerk reactions to not like this, but consider for a moment how awful Target’s preorder system is. I mean, seriously–has anyone who’s not a scalper using a bot ever successfully preordered an exclusive item from them before?

Also, I have a feeling this one won’t be too hard to find. Where Target completely fails at online toy sales, they at least seem competent at getting products into their physical stores. Without a preorder period, that should (HOPEFULLY) mean plenty of stock will be shipped to brick and mortar locations.

Available Preorders

In addition to the items listed above, the previously announced Teebo, IG-11, and Lando Calrissian Vintage Collection figures will also be available for preorder Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT.

Pipeline Reveals

  • Repacked Yoda (meh)
  • 501st Clone Trooper (without an alternate Ahsoka/332nd Company helmet, which is very disappointing).
  • Mandalorian Deathwatch Airborne Trooper (!)
  • Figrin Dan (!!!!!!!!!!)

Now let’s take a look at the Black Series reveals, which were significantly less exciting…except for this first one.

Black Series Gaming Great Jet Trooper

I normally pass on the Gaming Greats stuff, but my love of all things blue and the incredible sculpt will likely make this a must buy for me. Even if you’ve never played Star Wars: Battle Front II (where this trooper appears), this figure would look great in any collection.

In addition to using the improved clone trooper body, it also comes with a peg for the jet pack that won’t be used on other models going forward.

The figure will be available for preorder Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT exclusively at GameStop. It will also carry slightly higher retail price point ($26.49), but that’s still better than a lot of the recent “deluxe” Black Series offerings.

Black Series Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday

Aside from a new head sculpt for Grogu and 3D painted mud weathering (?) on Dinjarin, this figure is essentially a repack based on a specific scene in Season 1, Episode 2 of The Mandalorian.

It does look kind of cool, but without a vibroblade or a mudhorn for them to fight, it’s not really that interesting (even with the cool mudhorn egg accessory). It will also retail for whopping $36.99 and is a Target exclusive, so yeah…definite pass.

No preorder date was listed for those who do want it, but the set is expected to be available in early 2022.

Next up is the Black Series credit collection. Each one will retail for $26.49 despite being a straight repack with a slightly different paint job and a minor additional accessory. They are also exclusive to various retailers who will have them available for preorder Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT

This next item wasn’t included on the livestream, but was revealed exclusively by FanthaTracks. It’s also by far the best Black Series item of this bunch.

Black Series Power of the Force Princess Leia

I know some folks love the nostalgic packaging, but this figure doesn’t need any help standing out as a must buy. Just look at that facial portrait!

The figure will retail for $26.49. No information about U.S. availability has been released yet, but it’s available now for preorder in the UK from Hasbro Pulse.

Black Series Pipeline Reveals

All the pipeline stuff was for the Archive Line, meaning they will be previous releases with some updates.

  • Emperor Palpatine
  • Lando Skiff Guard
  • C-3P0 (Episode IV)
  • Dengar

Like I said, not very exciting.

Let’s finish things off with a look at the role play and retro stuff. The appeal behind this first reveal complete baffles me, but people seem to dig it for some reason.

Retro Collection Stormtrooper Prototype

I can’t be the only won gets a craving for Gushers or Jolly Ranchers after seeing these, right?

Whatever the case, this will be a Target exclusive and costs only $1 dollar less ($12.99) than figures from the super articulated Vintage Collection line. If you really want one, then it goes up for preorder Thursday at 1:00 PM EDT.

Force FX Elite Rey Skywalker Lightsaber

Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday Star Wars Vintage Collection shines in Hasbro's Fan First Wednesday

Before you write this one off, the hilt emits a cool green/blue flash when the blade ignites. Also, the picture up there doesn’t do the yellow glow justice–and I typically am not a fan of that color.

I’m not about to drop $264.99 for one, but if you want to, then it’ll be available for preorder from your preferred online retailers at 1:00 PM EDT on Thursday.

The Hasbro team also announced that a Force FX Leia Lightsaber is coming soon. Now that might be worth $265.
