Trek to Yomi gameplay trailer shows off style and substance

2022 can’t come soon enough.

If you finished Ghost of Tsushima and we were wondering where your next samurai adventure would come from, you can wonder no more. Devolver Digital today shared the first gameplay trailer for the upcoming Trek to Yomi.

Trek to Yomi, from writer Leonard Menchiari and developer Flying Wild Hog, is a side-scrolling “cinematic adventure” where players take control of swordsman Hiroki as he goes on a journey to protect his village. The game absolutely nails the black and white aesthetic of Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films and its music and audio design are top notch. At the end of the trailer we get a glimpse of some supernatural/mystical elements of the game, showcasing the titular “Yomi” (land of the dead).

“The titular trek is filled with enemies that players will never see coming, and only by tactfully deploying their most powerful attacks and skills do they have a chance at seeing their journey’s end,” Devolver Digital’s press release said of the game. Trek to Yomi will require players to be patient and rely on perfect timing to use their foes’ strength and weight against them. Its combat really captures the spirit and discipline of the samurai.

Trek to Yomi is due out on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S sometime in spring of next year.
