Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! Going out somewhere nice and having a couple of fancy drinks is never a bad idea and gifts are fun. (Unless, you are trying to get a Playstation 5. If that’s what you want on February 14, you may be a little disappointed.) But sometimes you just want to snuggle up with someone near and dear to you and watch some romantic flicks. Here are some movies about true love you may not have seen yet.
After Midnight
Romance and horror are always a strange mix. It is usually based more on lust and when there is true romance, it tends to be dark with gothic overtones. After Midnight is a modern day horror that also tells a touching love story. The tale of Abby (Brea Grant) and Hank (Jeremy Gardner) is well written and pairs well with the scares.
Better Off Dead
John Cusack in the 1980s evokes a certain type of character. While there is some of that here, this is not your typical John Hughes high school story. When Lane Meyer’s (Cusack) girlfriend breaks up with him, he becomes suicidal. The dark subject matter gets over the pain of young love.
Secretary
Highly controversial when it was released in 2002, this movie would still turn heads in today’s more accepting world. The story of two people who begin in a consenting BDSM relationship puts similar movies to shame. Emotionally stirring and with interesting characters, Secretary is an unconventional love story that is highly enjoyable.
Seems Like Old Times
It is kinda funny to think of Chevy Chase as a viable lead in a romantic comedy, but this movie is a great example of what could have been. Chase and Goldie Hawn play off each other fantastically in this screwball comedy that will have you wondering where Chase went wrong.
The Handmaiden
This twisting tale of pornography and masochism has a tender love story at its center. Director Park Chan-wook masterfully directs this psychological thriller that will have you rooting for its two romantic leads – just like every good movie about love should.
Wild at Heart
David Lynch has always done a great job of bringing sexual tension to his works. Wild at Heart is no different, but there is also a strong undercurrent of love that flows through the whole thing. Everything Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern) do oozes with passion.
