Universal releases first trailer for Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’

We attempted to break down the Nope, but still have no idea what’s going on…and can’t wait to see it this summer.

The Super Bowl may seem like the perfect time for a studio to drop a big trailer, but Universal decided to get a head start on things early on Sunday with the first full length trailer for Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror film, Nope.

Considering how good the last two films written and directed by Peele were (Get Out and Us), anticipation for this one was already high. Add in the bizarre/mysterious premise, and this trailer didn’t need a football game (which the Bengals will hopefully win) to make folks check it out.

The trailer is great, but doesn’t offer much in the way of solid information. Here’s what we can glean so far:

James Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) and Jill Haywood (Keke Palmer) portray the owners of Haywood Ranch, Hollywood’s only Black-owned horse training operation. Jill appears to be 100% focused on making it big in the entertainment industry. James…not so much.

At some point, something begins hovering over the town that starts causing all types of weird stuff to happen. Animals get spooked, inflatable tube men go limp, and everyone keeps looking up–including whoever this is.

Nope

The rest of the trailer heavily implies that an alien presence is involved. A few of things we see include a UFO hovering over the ranch (with a kite attached to it), a large-headed creature stalking someone in the dark, and Jill getting pulled into the sky.

Nope

Before anyone settles on the alien theory, it’s worth noting that James asks if there’s such a thing as a “bad miracle,” which could definitely point toward a supernatural element to the story.

Whether the threat in Peele’s latest work ends up being supernatural, sci-fi, or a mix of both, you can bet it’ll be all types of terrifying.

Nope hits theaters July 22.
