Chip Zdarsky & Jorge Jimenez new creative team on ‘Batman’ #125

Zdarsky’s Batman will feature ‘non-stop action and puts Batman in a very different place by the end of it.’

The word is out, Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez will be the new ongoing Batman series creators. The series has changed hands recently as Josh Williamson and Jorge Molina took over from James Tynion IV and Jimenez with Batman #116. Clearly, they were interim creators while Jimenez got headway on the new run headed by Zdarsky.

“When DC approached me to write Batman, I immediately thought about things that could really challenge the character mentally, physically, and in terms of his relationships,” Zdarsky told ComicBook.com. “Failsafe is his Doomsday. When I started mapping out the story I got really excited about where it could take the title.”

Comicbook.com had the exclusive news, which revealed the creative team would kick off a six-part “Failsafe” storyline on July 5th. Joining them on colors is Tomeu Morey.

Zdarsky detailed his approach via his Substack, saying the series will go darker with the character. He also confirmed he’s staying on the series for quite awhile, “For all those asking, yes, this is for the long haul. Or at least until DC realizes their mistake. I’ve been cooking up plans that will be felt through all the bat-titles, which have an amazing roster of talent on them, and I think readers will be pretty happy.”

Zdarsky also detailed the first story arc by saying “Batman’s Doomsday. It’s non-stop action and puts Batman in a very different place by the end of it.”

“He’s a superstar!” Zdarsky said of working with Jiménez. “Not just as an artist, but as a person! He’s really delightful and excited about the character and the direction we’re going in, which is great. We talked about going darker with the book and he’s been all aboard, with some really stunning pages that showcase the tone. I honestly can’t say enough good things about Jorge. He creates beauty at an amazing speed. I’m angry that he’s also so handsome as it’s just not fair. The only good thing about the pandemic is that I probably won’t have to be on a panel next to him which would only serve to highlight how old and gross I look.”
