On Friday, Anthony D’Alessandro of Deadline exclusively revealed that Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will both produce and star in a sequel to 2007’s I Am Legend.

If you’re a regular reader of AIPT, then there’s a good chance you realize that the 2007 movie completely whiffed on the point (and title) of the Richard Matheson novel it’s based on. That being said, you also likely know/agree that the movie was still very good, largely due to Smith’s incredible performance.
Add in an incredible actor like Michael B. Jordan, and it’s hard not to get excited about the possibilities for a sequel–especially with both he and Smith producing the film.

D’Alessandro’s report also states that Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman will return to pen the sequel. He’ll have the unenviable task of figuring out how to have Will Smith’s character Neville show up again after he heroically sacrificed himself at the conclusion of the theatrical release. Neville actually survives in the alternate (and generally preferred) ending to the film, but it’s doubtful the studio will let story continue to branch off from it.
No word on who will direct or any plot details, but those bits of information should begin showing up soon.
