On Friday, Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Fede Alvarez has been tapped by 20th Century Studios to write and direct a new Alien film, which will premiere Hulu.
Alvarez co-wrote and directed the very well-received horror film Don’t Breathe 2016. He also wrote and directed Don’t Breathe 2, although that isn’t necessarily a point in his favor.
That being said, it’s still great to see someone with horror chops taking the reigns of the Alien series. I love Ridley Scott as much as the next sci-fi nerd, but his determination to take the xenomorph franchise in a terribly boring direction (via Prometheus and Alien: Covenant) makes some new blood in the writer/director chair a welcome development.
Despite Scott claiming he was done with the story from those two films, back-to-back duds are a good indication that it’s time to give someone else a shot. He’ll also be a producer on this film, so it’s not like the franchise is being taken completely out of his hands.
In the spirit of full disclosure, it should be noted that I still haven’t forgiven Ridley Scott for (allegedly) killing Neill Bloomkamp’s incredible idea for a direct sequel to Aliens.
It’s also pretty cool that this film will be getting a release on Hulu. Considering how good No Exit was, it appears 20th Century Studios is committed to producing quality films to debut on the platform. Studio president Steve Asbell is already on record saying that he wants to produce at least 10 original movies a year on the streaming service.
Now we know at least one of them will feature some xenomorphs.
